BMW has redefined its flagship i7 electric sedan, showcasing the updated model simultaneously at Grand Central Terminal and Auto China. This new version features cutting-edge Gen6 cylindrical batteries sourced from Rimac and innovative motors that eliminate the need for rare-earth materials.
The automotive landscape shifted when BMW announced it would drop Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities. While this move reflects a commitment to safety, many see it as limiting the i7’s technological edge against competitors that still offer advanced driver-assistance features.
In addition to the loss of Level 3 autonomy, the facelifted i7 includes impressive specifications: the i7 60 xDrive boasts a range exceeding 350 miles EPA, while the i7 50 reaches up to 611 km. The use of SiC inverters paired with 250 kW charging capability reinforces BMW’s dedication to performance.
This strategic shift could reframe consumer expectations. over autonomy, BMW aims to solidify its leadership in electric mobility while navigating an increasingly competitive market.
