About 80 kilometers from Tokyo, just a 40-minute ride on the Shinkansen, lies the city of Odawara. This charming city is renowned for its castle, and my mission for the morning was to pay a visit to this historic landmark. The visit to Odawara Castle itself doesn’t require an entire day, so after exploring the castle, I planned to continue my journey along the same train line.
Odawara Castle, a symbol of the city’s rich history, has stood for centuries, playing a significant role in the region’s feudal past. Originally built in the 15th century, the castle has been reconstructed multiple times, with the current structure completed in the 1960s replicating the original design. As I approached the castle grounds, I was greeted trees in full bloom, adding a picturesque backdrop to the ancient structure.
Entering the castle, visitors are treated to a museum that showcases artifacts from the Edo period, providing valuable insights into the life and culture of that era. I wandered through the various exhibits, fascinated designed samurai armor and the detailed scrolls depicting historical events. The museum experience was enriching, making the castle visit much more than just a visual delight.
After exploring the interior, I ascended to the observation deck. The view from the top was breathtaking, with the city of Odawara stretching out below and the distant silhouette of the Hakone mountains framing the horizon. It was a moment of tranquility, allowing me to appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds this historical site.
Once my visit to Odawara Castle concluded, I felt a sense of fulfillment but knew there was more to discover. Following my initial itinerary, I hopped back on the Shinkansen to continue my journey. The ease of train travel in Japan makes it simple to explore multiple destinations in one day, and I was eager to see where the next stop would lead me.
