Chandigarh: Residents flag spike in power bills, CPDL cites billing changes

Published on March 29, 2026

Residents of Chandigarh have raised concerns regarding a significant increase in their electricity bills over the past few months, attributing the rise to unforeseen billing changes implemented Power Distribution Limited (CPDL). Many consumers claim that despite their persistent attempts to contact the authorities for clarification, their grievances remain unaddressed, and they have received inadequate explanations from officials.

According to numerous residents in various sectors of the city, the sudden surge in their electricity bills has come as a shock. While some have reported increases of up to 50% compared to previous months, others have found discrepancies in their billing statements that they are unable to comprehend.

“I’ve always paid my bills on time and have never faced such a steep jump. It’s frustrating to see no one taking our concerns seriously,” said Anita Sharma, a resident of Sector 17. Like many others, Sharma has reached out to CPDL multiple times, yet she has found little comfort or resolution in their responses.

In light of these complaints, a spokesperson for CPDL has acknowledged the issue but attributes the increased bills to changes in the billing methodology that were introduced earlier this year. They explained that the adjustments were made to improve accuracy in consumption measurements and to align with national regulatory standards.

However, consumers are skeptical of this explanation. “If these changes were necessary, they should have been communicated more clearly,” stated Rajesh Kumar, another affected resident. “We should not have to bear the brunt of miscommunication and lack of transparency.”

The growing discontent has prompted some residents to consider organizing a collective appeal to CPDL, urging them to review the billing practices and offer compensatory measures for those adversely affected . “We aren’t looking for handouts; we just want fair billing procedures and honest communication from our utility provider,” asserted Priya Singh, who has taken up the cause for her neighbors.

Consumer rights groups in Chandigarh are also monitoring the situation closely, encouraging residents to document their billing patterns and experiences to present a comprehensive case to the authorities. They stress the importance of transparency and accountability in public services to ensure consumer trust.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how CPDL will respond to the mounting pressure from consumers. Many hope for clearer lines of communication and a resolution that adequately addresses their growing concerns over skyrocketing electricity costs.
