In a proactive move to align with the government’s recent announcement mandating that at least 50% of cocoa be processed locally, Dr. Wisdom Kofi Dogbey, Managing Director of the Cocoa Marketing Company (CMC), visited West Africa Mills Company (WAMCO) to evaluate the readiness of cocoa processing companies for this significant reform.
This initiative, aimed at enhancing local cocoa processing capacities, is a crucial step towards boosting the domestic economy and ensuring that Ghana’s cocoa industry remains competitive on the global stage. The government’s reform is expected to create jobs, increase value addition in the country, and foster sustainable practices within the cocoa sector.
During his visit, Dr. Dogbey engaged with WAMCO’s management team, discussing the challenges and opportunities presented policy. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the CMC and cocoa processing companies to ensure a smooth transition to the mandated processing requirements.
WAMCO executives expressed their commitment to meeting the processing targets and reiterated the need for continued support from the government and CMC. They highlighted the necessity for investment in modern processing technologies and capacity building among local processors to enhance efficiency and product quality.
The CMC’s engagement with WAMCO is part of a broader strategy to prepare all stakeholders in the cocoa supply chain for the impending changes. Dr. Dogbey also mentioned that the CMC would be conducting further assessments across other cocoa processors to facilitate a collective readiness for the reforms.
As Ghana strives to diversify its economy and maximize the benefits derived from its cocoa production, the government’s commitment to local processing represents a transformative approach to leveraging the country’s rich cocoa resources effectively. The involvement of key industry players like WAMCO signals a positive shift towards meeting these national objectives.
