At 7:35 AM, I boarded the high-speed train bound for Tokyo. I was amazed people travel in Japan. The train was packed. The second train to Niigata was also full. While I am on vacation, I couldn’t help but wonder what everyone else was doing traveling at 8:00 AM on a Saturday.
The punctuality and efficiency of the Japanese rail system never cease to impress me. As I settled into my seat, I noticed fellow passengers engrossed in their smartphones, reading books, or simply gazing out the window at the blurring scenery of rural Japan. The landscape transitioned from urban development to lush, green fields dotted with traditional farms.
After arriving in Tokyo, I made my way to a local sake bar to indulge in some of Japan’s renowned rice wine. The variety of sake available was staggering, each with distinctive flavors reflecting regional differences. I savored a smooth Junmai Daiginjo, which had a delicate aroma and a clean finish. The experience was enhanced hospitality of the staff, who guided me through their offerings with genuine enthusiasm.
Next on my agenda was tasting one of Japan’s most beloved dishes: tonkatsu, or breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet. I found a quaint little restaurant celebrated for its tonkatsu. The aroma wafting through the air was irresistible. My meal arrived, a perfectly breaded cutlet served with a side of shredded cabbage and tangy tonkatsu sauce. Each bite celebrated the harmony of crispy texture and juicy flavor—a true culinary delight.
Later, I took a leisurely stroll through the streets of Tokyo, absorbing the vibrant atmosphere. The city was alive with energy, from bustling markets to serene gardens. I made it a point to visit a few iconic landmarks before my day came to a close, snapping photos of the historical sites juxtaposed with modern architecture.
As the sun began to set, I felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences I had on this day. Japan’s unique blend of tradition and modernity continues to captivate me, and I am eager to see what tomorrow holds as I venture further into this remarkable country.
