Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has called for the full implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka, emphasizing its importance in addressing the aspirations of the minority Tamil community for equality and justice. His remarks were made during a recent visit to the island nation, where he expressed hope for a meaningful reconciliation process that recognizes the rights of Tamil people.
The 13th Amendment, enacted in 1987, aims to provide a framework for the devolution of power to provincial councils, facilitating better governance for ethnic minorities, particularly Tamils in the Northern and Eastern provinces. Jaishankar underscored that fulfilling the provisions of this amendment is crucial for fostering harmony and stability in Sri Lanka.
During discussions with Sri Lankan officials, Jaishankar reiterated India’s unwavering support for the country’s multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, and multi-religious identity. He highlighted the longstanding ties between India and Sri Lanka, which are rooted in shared history and cultural connections.
In addition to advocating for the rights of the Tamil community, Jaishankar spoke about India’s significant contributions to Sri Lanka’s development initiatives. He noted that India has extended approximately USD 4 billion in financial assistance, aimed at various sectors including infrastructure, healthcare, and education. This support is critical for enhancing Sri Lanka’s stability and fostering economic growth.
Furthermore, the External Affairs Minister touched upon the collaborative efforts underway between the two nations to address Sri Lanka’s energy needs. Discussions included plans for regional economic activities that would benefit both countries, reinforcing India’s commitment to supporting its neighbor in navigating current challenges.
