The arch is elaborately decorated with its voussoirs and topped with a wide alfiz. The arches are embellished with vegetal scrolls, and above them runs a frieze inscribed in Kufic script, extolling Allah. Even further outward, another frieze follows the arch’s lateral sides, displaying similar motifs in a vibrant blue hue. The upper part is embellished with seven blind lobed arches, within which stylized, polychrome trees of life can be seen.
In this façade, various artisan techniques were harmonized, including marble carving, plasterwork, ceramics, painting, and mosaic decoration. Notably, it is known that a Byzantine mosaic artist was sent to Córdoba at the request of the Caliph Al-Hakam II éforo Focas of Byzantium. This talented artist left a mark of skill and artistic quality, working with tiny tesserae made from diverse materials to enhance the decorative effects and overall beauty of the ensemble.
This decorative theme extends to the impressive ribbed dome situated immediately in front of the mihrab façade, covering the space of the maqsura. Thus, the Caliph, seated here every Friday, could feel that he had not only sufficiently fulfilled his devotion to Allah but also demonstrated the extent of his wealth and authority to the world.
