P. Shanmugam, the State secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], recently addressed the ongoing political climate in Tamil Nadu, emphasizing the unwavering commitment of the Left to workers’ rights. In a statement reflecting on the upcoming elections, Shanmugam reaffirmed that while elections come and go, the fundamental principles driving the Left’s political agenda remain constant.
“The commitment to safeguard workers’ rights is at the core of our ideology. We stand firm in our belief that every worker deserves not just fair wages and job security, but also respect and dignity in their workplace,” Shanmugam articulated. He underscored the importance of addressing the challenges faced the current economic landscape, emphasizing that their struggles are a priority for the Left.
Shanmugam also discussed the necessity of unity among the secular and progressive factions within the state, particularly in the face of the electoral alliance formed Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). “The Secular Progressive Alliance is imperative not only to contest the elections but to foster an atmosphere where diversity is celebrated and protected. Our shared goal is to work collectively to defeat the BJP-AIADMK combine, which poses a significant threat to the values we hold dear,” he stated.
Drawing attention to the socio-political landscape, Shanmugam cautioned against the rising tide of communal polarisation and the impact it has on the socially disadvantaged segments of society. He called for a concerted effort to rally the electorate around a progressive narrative that places the needs of the people above divisive politics.
“The real challenge lies in ensuring that our voices are heard and that the needs of the grassroots movements are prioritized in our political discussions. We must not allow the transient nature of electoral politics to detract from our long-term goals of securing justice and equity for all,” he added.
As the elections draw near, Shanmugam’s remarks serve as a reminder of the foundational philosophies that guide the CPI(M) and its allies. The Left’s commitment to workers, coupled with the pursuit of a more inclusive society, could play a pivotal role in shaping the electoral outcomes in Tamil Nadu.
