A severe outbreak of Hepatitis A has prompted investigations Prosecutor’s Office and the Nas, the Italian police specialized in food safety and health. The focus of the inquiry centers on the possibility that contaminated mussels imported from abroad are responsible for the spike in infections.

According to the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS), March alone saw a staggering 160 reported cases of Hepatitis A, with 110 of these occurring in the Campania region. Health officials are sounding the alarm as they trace the source of these outbreaks, particularly scrutinizing food supply chains and import practices.

In response to the growing concern, the ISS has compiled a comprehensive guide outlining preventive measures that individuals can take to safeguard themselves against the infection. This guide emphasizes the importance of food hygiene, recommending thorough cooking of shellfish and careful handling of food to reduce the risk of contamination.

Additionally, the ISS advises that vaccination against Hepatitis A is a crucial step, especially for those who may be at higher risk due to travel or consumption of potentially contaminated food sources. Health authorities are actively encouraging the population to consider vaccination, as it can provide effective protection against the virus.

As the investigation unfolds, officials are urging the public to remain vigilant about food safety practices, particularly during the upcoming warm months when seafood consumption typically increases. The situation remains dynamic, and updates from health authorities are expected as they work to identify the source of the outbreak and prevent further cases of infection.
