This year is shaping up to be exceptional for fantasy anime, especially with the strong start of 2026 marked of “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.” In addition, audiences welcomed the debut of “Sentenced To Be A Hero,” which has quickly become one of the most-watched anime on Crunchyroll since its premiere.
“Sentenced To Be A Hero” introduces viewers to a world where the worst punishment is to be a hero, as it involves battling a plague of monsters until death—only to be resurrected repeatedly, losing memories and identity along the way.
This was the daily reality of Xylo Forbatz, until a chance encounter with the goddess Teoritta led to a bond between them. This connection uncovers a conspiracy in which both characters play pivotal roles, setting the stage for future developments.
The official account of “Sentenced To Be A Hero” has confirmed that the second season of the anime is in production. They teased that “the heroes continue on, facing an endless punishment,” alongside the release of a promotional poster featuring the protagonists as they embark on their next chapter.
To date, the anime has adapted the first three light novels from Rocket Shōkai and Mephisto. Currently, eight volumes have been published, providing ample material for another short season of 12 to 13 episodes. However, a release date for the second season has not yet been set, and the studio is overloaded with projects.
Studio Kai is set to release three animes this spring, including “Breaking the Ice” on Netflix. Given their busy schedule, it remains to be seen if this will delay the follow-up to “Sentenced To Be A Hero.” Nonetheless, considering the series’ success, the studio may not want to miss out on the hype, potentially targeting an early 2027 release.
