France’s first woman in space in 25 years counts down to trip to the ISS

Published on April 3, 2026

French astronaut Sophie Adenot is counting down to her historic mission to the International Space Station (ISS), set for February 2026. With this journey, Adenot will become the first French woman to venture into space since 2001, marking a significant milestone in France’s space exploration history.

Adenot, an accomplished pilot and engineer, has been training rigorously for her upcoming 8-month mission. Her time aboard the ISS will be dedicated to conducting nearly 200 scientific experiments aimed at advancing our understanding of various scientific fields, including biology, physics, and material science. The research conducted in the unique microgravity environment of the ISS promises to yield valuable insights that could benefit life on Earth and future space exploration.

As she prepares for her mission, Adenot emphasizes the significance of her role as a female astronaut. “I hope to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and explorers, particularly young women, to pursue their dreams in fields that have historically been male-dominated,” she stated. Her journey reflects a broader push towards gender equality in the STEM fields and aims to encourage more diversity in space exploration.

The French Space Agency (CNES) has expressed immense pride in Adenot’s achievements. CNES president Philippe Baptiste highlighted the importance of her mission, saying, “Sophie represents the aspirations of many who wish to explore space and contribute to scientific advancement. Her journey will serve as a beacon of hope for aspiring astronauts everywhere.”

Adenot’s preparations include extensive simulations, physical training, and collaboration with international space agencies. She is set to join an international crew aboard the ISS, where teamwork will be essential for the success of their scientific pursuits and the overall mission.

As the countdown to her launch begins, the excitement surrounding Adenot’s mission is palpable. With nearly two and a half years remaining before she embarks on this groundbreaking journey, the world watches eagerly, anticipating the contributions she will make to space science and the inspiration she will provide to future generations.
