France’s G7 presidency: Fostering collective action

Published on March 26, 2026

The international order is increasingly fragmented, with its foundational principles being eroded. In the wake of numerous armed conflicts since World War II, trade tensions, and economic imbalances among major global regions, the collective strength of nations seems to be weakening. The ongoing war in the Middle East exemplifies the difficulties faced in resolving disputes through diplomatic means.

In September 2025, French President Emmanuel Macron articulated a pressing concern during his address to the United Nations General Assembly. He warned against a prevailing “might is right” mentality, emphasizing the need for a new international order that fosters fairness and effectiveness under the banner of renewed multilateralism.

This year, France takes the helm of the Group of 7 (G7), culminating in a summit of heads of state and government set to take place in Évian from June 15 to 17. France’s ambition during its G7 presidency is to tackle the structural factors that contribute to destabilization and to address economic and geopolitical imbalances. The goal is to enhance the resilience of societies while reassessing partnerships with the most vulnerable countries. The G7 aims to encourage balanced and sustainable global growth for all.

France is committed to working collaboratively to strengthen the resilience of strategic supply chains, combat drug trafficking, and create safe digital environments for children. Environmental protection remains a priority, with a focus on biodiversity and the preservation of oceans and water resources.

To effectively respond to these multifaceted challenges, dialogue will extend beyond the wealthiest nations. France has decided to involve major emerging economies and regional partners in its G7 initiatives. An expanded G7 foreign ministers’ meeting is scheduled to take place at Les Vaux-de-Cernay near Paris, including representatives from Brazil, India, Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Ukraine. The participation of these countries is deemed crucial for addressing a growing array of global governance issues, reconstruction efforts, and combating transnational threats.

Staying true to its founding role since 1975, France aims to demonstrate that the G7—a group initiated in response to the first oil crisis—champions a shared vision of global prosperity based on solidarity among nations, economic stability, and collective responsibility. Through its presidency, France seeks a balance of interests, convergence, and tangible results to foster real progress in security and prosperity for all nations.

France looks forward to active participation from Korea in this ambitious agenda, emphasizing the collaborative spirit needed to face the modern challenges confronting the world.
