In a recent statement, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge expressed strong discontent with the current government’s approach to parliamentary proceedings, particularly regarding the Leader of Opposition (LoP). He emphasized that the government is determined to prevent the LoP from speaking in both Houses of Parliament, an action the opposition deems as stifling democratic dialogue.
Kharge’s remarks came after the opposition was compelled to walk out of the Rajya Sabha, which he attributed to the government’s refusal to engage in meaningful discussions. “We were forced to take this step because the ruling party is not willing to listen to our concerns or address the issues we raise,” he stated. This walkout, according to Kharge, reflects the growing frustration within the opposition over the government’s lack of transparency and accountability.
The Congress leader also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent speeches, labeling them as partisan and misleading. “The Prime Minister’s words do not reflect the reality faced people. His speeches are filled with half-truths that divert attention from pressing issues,” Kharge remarked. He urged the government to focus on governance instead of political rhetoric.
Other Congress leaders joined Kharge in denouncing the government’s stance. They argued that an open and fair debate is essential for a healthy democracy, and sidelining the LoP undermines that principle. The opposition plans to continue raising their voices against what they perceive as unilateral decision-making , insisting they will not back down from their accountability demands.
As tensions rise between the ruling party and the opposition, the conduct of parliamentary debates remains under scrutiny. The Congress party is determined to challenge what it sees as an erosion of democratic norms in the face of opposition silencing tactics.
