Advocacy groups have voiced strong criticism of the Taiwanese government’s recent decision to ease regulations surrounding the hiring of migrant domestic workers. They argue that this policy shift is unlikely to significantly mitigate the nation’s persistently low birth rate.
The government announced the relaxed rules on the hiring of foreign caregivers as part of a broader effort to support working parents. However, advocates for labor rights and family welfare contend that this initiative may not adequately address the underlying issues contributing to Taiwan’s declining birth rate.
Instead, these groups argue that the government should focus on more comprehensive solutions, such as enhancing support for families, improving child care facilities, and offering better financial incentives for parents. They emphasize that while the easing of hiring restrictions might provide immediate relief in terms of household assistance, it does not tackle the root causes of why many couples are opting not to have children.
Conversely, the government did introduce a new policy that allows parents to work shorter hours, which has been positively received . They believe this measure could encourage families to have more children to spend more quality time with their offspring.
Despite the contrasting reactions to each policy, critics are calling for a more integrated approach to family support that considers both the needs of working parents and the long-term demographic challenges faced . They urge the government to implement more robust strategies to promote family growth rather than relying primarily on foreign labor to alleviate domestic pressures.
The discourse around these policies comes at a critical time for Taiwan, as its low birth rate continues to raise concerns about the future workforce and economic sustainability. As such, advocacy organizations remain vigilant, urging the government to reassess its priorities in this area.
