Nearly 30 percent of the world’s population remains offline, lacking access to essential internet services. As daily activities like shopping and remote work increasingly rely on digital connectivity, over 2 billion people find themselves disconnected from this lifeline. The urgency for inclusion has prompted organizations to reevaluate their approach to digital accessibility. In response, the IEEE Future Networks program launched the Connecting the Unconnected (CTU) initiative. Established in 2021, this program focuses on advancing the development and implementation of 5G and 6G technologies. It also hosts an annual competition aimed at innovators dedicated to increasing internet access for underserved communities. To further the conversation, the initiative gathers experts at summits to strategize on expanding connectivity. The 2023 CTU competition has seen participation from diverse groups, including nonprofits and academic institutions, with 245 projects submitted from over 50 countries. Winning ideas include a solar-powered broadband network in Tanzania and an FM radio-based low-cost internet solution. Highlights from last year’s winners showcase how grassroots projects can enhance connectivity and provide critical services to isolated communities, such as healthcare access in rural India. IEEE’s commitment goes beyond recognition and awards. The introduction of the Empowerment Through Mentorship program aims to provide ongoing support to innovators, helping them transform ideas into sustainable businesses. This multifaceted approach not only bridges technological gaps but also fosters economic opportunities, highlighting the critical need for inclusive digital solutions worldwide.
