At the recent Winter Olympics, Rich Ruohonen made history as the oldest American Olympian to compete, asserting that age is merely a number when it comes to pursuing one’s dreams. At 54, the seasoned curler stood on the world stage, exemplifying dedication not only to his sport but also to his career as a full-time lawyer.
Balancing the rigorous demands of both curling and practicing law is no small feat. Ruohonen’s days are packed; he often finds himself working over 40 hours a week while traveling for competitions. Early mornings are reserved for practicing on the ice, and late nights for casework, leaving little room for downtime. “Juggling both has been challenging, but my passion for curling keeps me motivated,” Ruohonen says.
His journey to the Olympics began long before the competition, rooted in a love for the sport that blossomed in his youth. Ruohonen understands the sacrifices that come with pursuing such lofty ambitions, reflecting on the countless hours spent away from family and friends. As he reflects on his Olympic experience, he expresses gratitude for the opportunity to compete at such a level, proud to show that commitment and perseverance can lead to extraordinary accomplishments at any age.
