An Indian-origin man residing in the United States has been charged with stealing over $1 million through a loan fraud scheme and subsequently misappropriating pandemic relief funds to purchase land in Fresno, California. The individual, identified as 39-year-old Ravi J. Gupta, allegedly exploited the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and other COVID-19 relief initiatives intended to support struggling businesses during the pandemic.
According to the prosecutors, Gupta submitted numerous fraudulent applications for PPP loans, claiming to operate multiple businesses that had been severely impacted . In reality, investigators found that many of these businesses either did not exist or had no employees, raising significant red flags regarding the legitimacy of his claims.
Gupta’s fraudulent activities reportedly netted him over $1 million in government loans, which he then diverted for personal use. As part of his scheme, he used a portion of the proceeds to purchase a sizable parcel of land in Fresno. This purchase drew the attention of federal authorities, who launched an investigation into his financial activities.
The case against Gupta is part of a broader crackdown on COVID-19 relief fraud agencies across the country. The U.S. Department of Justice has vowed to pursue individuals who misuse government assistance programs during the pandemic, emphasizing the seriousness of the offenses linked to such fraudulent schemes.
If convicted, Gupta faces significant prison time, fines, and restitution for his actions. The federal authorities are urging any individuals with information related to pandemic relief fraud to come forward, reinforcing their commitment to holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring that assistance reaches those who genuinely need it.
