In a world increasingly focused on sustainability, Rise Energy has emerged from Iowa State University as a pioneer in biofuel technology. Founded in 2022, the startup leverages materials that would otherwise be discarded, including hardwood from basketball courts and agricultural by-products, to create efficient fuels.
Their recent use of salvaged wood from the Hilton Coliseum’s renovation showcases their unique approach. a specialized bioreactor, the team turns this waste into usable fuel, highlighting the potential for innovative methods in recycling organic materials.
This process converts a range of biowastes into three valuable by-products: phenolic oil for fuel, biochar for carbon sequestration, and sugars for further processing. The technology, developed over the past decade, introduces controlled oxygen flow to optimize the energy output, setting it apart from traditional methods.
As a result, Rise Energy’s approach not only provides a solution to waste management but also addresses carbon emissions through biochar production. With recent funding from DARPA, the startup is now poised to scale its operations and explore new markets, potentially reshaping the future of aviation fuel.
