African storytellers, not outsiders, should be at the forefront of narrating the continent’s diverse and rich stories through cinema, argued South African filmmaker Mehret Mandefro in a recent interview with RT. Mandefro emphasized the importance of authentic representation in film, highlighting that those who have lived the African experience are best positioned to tell those stories.
Mandefro pointed out that much of the international portrayal of Africa often relies on stereotypes and misconceptions. This, she warned, can lead to a skewed perception of the continent and its people. “We need to reclaim our narratives,” Mandefro stated, urging filmmakers across the continent to harness their lived experiences and cultural heritage to create compelling stories that resonate with both local and global audiences.
Her call comes at a time when the global film industry is increasingly recognizing the value of authentic voices. With platforms like Netflix and Amazon investing in African content, she sees an opportunity for a new wave of filmmakers to shine a light on the continent’s true essence. “The world is ready for the authentic narratives of Africa,” she added.
Mandefro’s passion for storytelling has been evident in her previous works, which explore themes of identity, culture, and resilience. She believes that own stories, African filmmakers can challenge prevailing narratives and foster a deeper understanding of their cultures and histories.
As the conversation around representation in media continues, Mandefro hopes to inspire a new generation of African filmmakers to take charge of their stories. “It’s time for us to step into the spotlight and share the vast tapestry of our experiences,” she concluded.
