In the realm of filmmaking, directors typically rely on traditional screens for previsualizing scenes. Jon Favreau, known for his innovative approach, has pushed these boundaries, particularly while creating The Mandalorian. His latest project, The Mandalorian and Grogu, set to release on May 22, showcases yet another leap in technology.
During filming, Favreau utilized an Apple Vision Pro app tailored for Disney. This software allowed him to experience his film in IMAX proportions, something he described as crucial for aligning shots accurately. “We built software so that I can pop on my Apple Vision Pro and be sitting in an IMAX movie theater,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of this tool for filmmakers.
Although other directors like Jon Chu have used the Apple Vision Pro for different purposes, Favreau’s focus on IMAX is particularly noteworthy. The capability to simulate a large format screen at home marks a potential shift in filmmaking techniques. As the technology matures, it may become more accessible for future projects.
Favreau expresses a preference for consumer technologies over artificial intelligence in film production. His experiences with the Unreal Engine for visual effects underscore a desire to leverage existing innovations. “Get it right before you ever paint a cel,” he stated, highlighting a philosophy that could redefine efficiencies in filmmaking.
