The Allahabad High Court has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Principal Secretary of Home Affairs to submit a report regarding lapses in the registration of First Information Reports (FIRs). This order comes in the context of a case where the complainant has alleged false promises of marriage leading to potential rape.
During a recent hearing, the court expressed concern over the inconsistent approach in handling FIR registrations in such sensitive cases. The petitioner argued that the police had failed to take appropriate action despite the serious nature of the allegations.
The bench emphasized the importance of prompt and accurate FIR registration as a fundamental right of individuals seeking justice. It criticized any delays or mishandling as detrimental to the legal process and the victim’s pursuit of justice.
The court’s directive highlights a growing concern within the judiciary regarding the handling of sexual assault and related crimes in Uttar Pradesh. Stakeholders, including legal advocates and women’s rights organizations, have been vocal about the need for reforms to ensure that victims are treated with respect and urgency.
Complying with the court’s order, both the DGP and the Principal Secretary are expected to present detailed reports outlining the procedures currently in place for FIR registrations, as well as any lapses identified in this specific case. The court aims to ensure that the rights of victims are upheld and that police departments are held accountable for their conduct.
This case presents yet another opportunity for the judiciary to scrutinize law enforcement practices and make necessary recommendations for improvements. The outcome of the court’s inquiry could potentially influence how similar cases are managed in the future, particularly in terms of ensuring timely responses in cases of sexual violence.
