Amidst ongoing shortages of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, residents of the National Capital Region (NCR) are turning to piped natural gas (PNG) as a viable alternative. In Noida, a notable surge in domestic PNG applications has been recorded, with over 4,000 submissions this month alone. This shift reflects a growing inclination among residents to seek a more reliable energy source amidst the backdrop of global tensions affecting LPG supplies.
The demand for PNG has seen a parallel rise in Ghaziabad, where applications have exceeded 5,000 since early March. The trend underscores a significant pivot away from traditional LPG cylinders, as more residents opt for the convenience and dependability of piped natural gas in their households.
In addition to this local shift, Delhi’s Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has also reported a substantial increase in new users on its IGL Connect app. This digital platform has been instrumental in streamlining PNG applications and converting inquiries into actual connections, catering to the community’s growing desire for uninterrupted energy access.
However, restaurants and eateries appear to be lagging behind in this transition. While domestic applications have surged, food service establishments are yet to catch up, potentially due to the higher installation costs and logistical challenges associated with switching to PNG. As the energy landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how quickly eateries will adapt to the changing demands of their customers and the market.
As the situation unfolds, the increasing reliance on piped natural gas reflects both a response to immediate shortages of LPG and a longer-term strategy for energy security among NCR residents. With ongoing global tensions, the evolution of energy supply methods may well shape the future of cooking and dining in the region.
