A Florida man has been charged with making threatening phone calls to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, just two days following the discovery of a suspicious package outside one of the installation’s gates. Authorities have not linked the calls to the package, nor have they accused the individual of planting any explosive devices.
The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Jacob Martin, allegedly made a series of calls to the base, during which he expressed threats towards the personnel and the facility. It was reported that the calls raised significant concern among officials at MacDill, prompting an immediate investigation.
According to a press release from the U.S. Air Force, the suspicious package, which was found on a Friday, led to heightened security measures at the base. Explosive ordnance disposal teams were dispatched, but the package was ultimately deemed safe and contained no hazardous materials. This incident significantly rattled the base, which is known for being home to key military operations and personnel.
Investigators tracked the threatening calls back to Martin, who was quickly apprehended. He now faces multiple felony charges related to making the threats. Federal law enforcement officials highlighted the seriousness of the charges, stating that threats made against military installations and their personnel are treated with utmost severity.
Community leaders and military officials have expressed concern over the increasing frequency of threats aimed at military bases. In light of recent events, there is a renewed call for vigilance among service members and their families, as well as for the public to report any suspicious activity.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with additional information related to the calls or the suspicious package incident to come forward. As the legal proceedings against Martin begin in the coming weeks, officials at MacDill are focused on maintaining a secure environment for all personnel stationed there.
