Mastodon Faces Major DDoS Attack, Service Disrupted

Published on April 20, 2026

Mastodon, a prominent decentralized social platform, briefly suffered significant disruptions due to a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. Users experienced difficulties accessing mastodon.social, the flagship instance, early Monday morning. This incident marked a troubling moment for the platform, which has been known for its relative stability in a decentralized ecosystem.

The attack was characterized as “major” , Mastodon’s head of communications. In response to the outage, the nonprofit implemented countermeasures and reported that mastodon.social was operational again a few hours later. However, Piper cautioned that users might still experience some instability as the platform continued to recover from the incident.

This disruption follows a similar attack on another decentralized service, Bluesky, which experienced its own DDoS issues just days prior. Bluesky managed to stabilize its service after announcing there was no evidence of unauthorized access to user data. However, soon after, users reported new problems, leading to questions about the overall security of decentralized platforms.

The impact of these attacks has raised concerns about the vulnerabilities of federated networks. As decentralized services gain popularity, incidents like these highlight the ongoing challenges they face regarding security and reliability. Users and developers alike are calling for increased protections as they navigate this evolving landscape.
