Meta has initiated a significant downsizing, cutting 10 percent of its workforce. Approximately 8,000 employees will face layoffs, and an additional 6,000 open positions are being eliminated. This decision comes as part of a broader strategy to enhance operational efficiency.
In an internal memo, Janelle Gale, Meta’s head of human resources, stated that these cuts are necessary to support ongoing investments, particularly in artificial intelligence. The company is focused on developing its AI models and incorporates advanced capabilities into its existing products, such as smart glasses.
This round of layoffs may not be the final wave of job cuts. Existing reports indicate that Meta has plans to potentially reduce its workforce 20 percent in the near future. Previous layoffs have already affected hundreds of positions, particularly in the Reality Labs division, and the company has shuttered several VR studios.
The repercussions of these layoffs extend beyond the immediate job losses. Employees face uncertainty as the company pivots towards high-tech initiatives amid cost-cutting measures. Stakeholders are closely monitoring how these changes will influence Meta’s long-term vision, particularly in evolving tech landscapes.
