Musk Commits to Upgrading Hardware 3 Tesla Vehicles for Full Self-Driving

Published on April 23, 2026

Tesla’s trajectory over recent years was marked , including achieving unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities. Cars manufactured from 2019 to early 2023, equipped with Hardware 3, were seen as stepping stones toward that vision. However, Tesla now faces a challenge: these vehicles lack the necessary technology to deliver on FSD promises.

In response, Tesla plans to upgrade the computers and cameras in these older models, yet a concrete strategy for implementing this is still pending. Musk suggests setting up microfactories in urban areas to streamline the upgrades, but no immediate construction plans were disclosed. Meanwhile, FSD version 14 is expected for Hardware 3 vehicles later this year.

This situation carries significant implications for Tesla and its customer base. Around 4 million vehicles are affected, prompting heightened scrutiny of the company’s capabilities and timelines. As Tesla pivots to upgrade its fleet and refocus on humanoid robot production, the path forward for many customers remains uncertain.
