New Zealand First has pledged to contribute $15 million towards the rebuilding of the iconic Christ Church Cathedral in Christchurch if the party is elected in the upcoming elections. This financial commitment aims to address a significant portion of the project’s funding needs, covering approximately one-third of the estimated shortfall.
The cathedral, which was severely damaged during the devastating earthquakes in 2011, has become a symbol of resilience for the city. The reconstruction efforts have faced numerous delays and funding challenges, prompting various stakeholders to seek alternative financial solutions.
