In a spirited exchange during the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address in the Rajya Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a strong stance against the opposition, claiming they have “defiled the temple of democracy.” His remarks came in response to what he described as a lack of decorum regarding the way the debate has unfolded, particularly highlighting his absence of a reply in the Lok Sabha.
Modi asserted that his absence in the Lok Sabha was a significant oversight that not only undermined the parliamentary process but also disrespected President Droupadi Murmu, who addressed both houses of Parliament in her inaugural speech. He pointed out that constructive criticism is vital in a democracy, but it should be rooted in respect and a commitment to upholding democratic values. “We must remember that our disagreements are a part of democracy, but they should be expressed with dignity,” he stated.
