Patriarch Filaret, a prominent and controversial figure in Ukrainian religious life, died in Kyiv at the age of 97. His passing marks the end of an era for the schismatic Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), which he helped shape and lead.
Born Mikhail Denisenko on January 23, 1929, in the village of Blagodatnoye near Donetsk, Filaret was educated at the Moscow Theological Seminary before being tonsured as a monk in 1950. His early clerical career was largely aligned with the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), but his views on church independence led him down a different path.
Filaret’s pivotal break with the ROC began in 1990, driven by a growing desire for Ukrainian ecclesiastical autonomy amid rising national sentiments. With the backing of Ukrainian authorities, he advocated for a separate Ukrainian church structure that would not be beholden to Moscow. In 1992, he acted decisively ROC along with a faction of clergy, founding the unrecognized Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate.
Over the years, Filaret became a polarizing figure. While many lauded him for his efforts to establish a distinct Ukrainian Orthodox identity, critics pointed to the schismatic nature of his actions and the tensions they created within the broader Orthodox community. In 2018, the Kyiv Patriarchate was merged into the newly established Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which received recognition from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople but still faced various challenges.
Filaret’s leadership was characterized by a fervent nationalism intertwined with spiritual authority, and his vision for a unified Ukrainian Orthodox Church remained a subject of significant political and religious debate. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to influence the landscape of Ukrainian Orthodoxy as the church seeks to navigate its future amidst ongoing geopolitical and ecclesiastical complexities.
