Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has set an ambitious target for the Long Thành International Airport, aiming to commence operations of 2026. This announcement highlights the Vietnamese government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s transportation infrastructure and boosting economic development.

As of now, significant progress has been made on the airport construction project. Work valued at approximately VNĐ64.1 trillion (US$2.4 billion) has been completed, which accounts for 74 percent of the total contracted value. Furthermore, the disbursement of funds has reached around VNĐ40.7 trillion, indicating robust financial backing for the project’s continuation.

The Long Thành airport, designed to handle up to 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo annually, is expected to alleviate overcapacity at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport, which is currently operating beyond its limits. The new facility is not only expected to improve air travel efficiency but also significantly contribute to local and national economic growth.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Chinh emphasized the importance of close coordination among various government agencies and contractors to ensure the project adheres to its timeline. He urged stakeholders to prioritize quality and safety while maintaining momentum in construction activities.

As construction progresses, the government is also focused on securing investments and developing necessary infrastructure, including roads and public transport links, to facilitate access to the airport once it is operational.

The Long Thành International Airport project is a cornerstone of Vietnam’s strategy to expand its aviation sector and position itself as a regional hub for air travel in Southeast Asia.
