Recent news has reported that several Hollywood stars have signed a letter against artificial intelligence (AI) due to copyright violations stemming from the use of third-party resources without permission. As a result, an increasing number of people on social media are posting AI-generated videos, attempting to showcase that synthetic actors can convey the same emotions as their human counterparts. While this notion has long been present in animated films, the conversation surrounding AI continues to gain traction. Many individuals are afraid of losing their jobs, while others seem driven to push AI forward, as if there were no tomorrow. The media portrays a chaotic world racing toward an uncertain future, with each party seemingly entrenched in their own battles.
However, no matter how adept synthetic performers might become at expressing emotions, there remains a critical component of the entertainment industry that AI will not be able to replace: celebrity culture. The success of cinema hinges not only on the quality of the films themselves but also on promotional campaigns that go far beyond the mere dissemination of images across communication channels. Live events featuring stars—such as premieres, interviews, autograph signings, and opportunities for fans to take selfies with their favorite actors—play a significant role in building excitement. If fans are limited to experiencing their idols solely through a screen, without the chance to see them in person even once, will this engender the same level of public interest?
Moreover, animation has historically created iconic characters that exist only on-screen. However, the trend has often been to hire grandes stars to voice these animated characters, which also aids in marketing efforts. In essence, creating synthetic actors, complete with AI-generated voices, would be akin to producing animation without the star power that enhances promotion. It is true that AI can be invaluable for creators with limited resources, allowing them to expand their cast with synthetic supporting characters and extras. Ultimately, the most effective approach may be a blend of traditional methods and modern tools rather than relying solely on a single, no matter how advanced.
Additionally, for filmmakers, if movies were created entirely using AI without any actual filming or team collaboration, what would be the joy of making movies? Cinema is not just about technical skills; it encompasses fun, teamwork, mythology, anecdotes, and a grand adventure.
