Roblox has maintained its open platform ethos, offering users unrestricted access to a vast array of games. However, this model is set to shift dramatically with a new system aimed at age segmentation, scheduled to roll out in mid-May. This change comes in the wake of heightened scrutiny regarding child safety in online spaces.
Starting next month, players will find themselves categorized into three distinct worlds based on age: Roblox Kids, Roblox Select, and Roblox. The initiative aligns with existing content maturity labels, but it formalizes restrictions that were previously more ambiguous. Users under 9 will have their chats disabled and access limited to games rated as Minimal or Mild.
Roblox reports that more than half of its user base has already undergone some form of age verification through ID checks or face scans. If users fail to verify their age, they’ll be relegated to the most restrictive setting, unable to chat or play anything beyond the Mild category. This move is part of a wider effort to ensure that content remains age-appropriate.
Despite these enhancements, concerns linger about the reliability of automated verification processes. Critics suggest that determined users may find ways to circumvent age checks, undermining the intentions of Roblox’s new system. As they work on refining these safeguards, the company has pledged to actively monitor gameplay to ensure compliance with age standards, indicating that user behavior will play a crucial role in maintaining platform integrity.
