M.D. Valsamma, a legendary figure in Indian athletics, expressed deep concern over the dwindling numbers of female athletes from Kerala, a state historically known for producing remarkable sports talents. Valsamma, who etched her name in Indian sports history gold medal in the 400m hurdles at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, recalled the golden era of women’s athletics in the region with a sense of nostalgia and sadness.
Reflecting on her achievements, Valsamma stated, “Winning gold at the Asian Games was a defining moment for me as an athlete. It was not just a personal victory, but a beacon of inspiration for many young girls in Kerala pursuing sports.” She also contributed to India’s remarkable journey to the women’s 4x400m relay final at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, a milestone that added to her legacy.
Despite her cherished memories, Valsamma lamented the current state of athletics, noting that fewer girls are participating in competitive sports in Kerala. “Once a powerhouse for female athletes, the state is now struggling to maintain its tradition. This decline is disheartening,” she remarked. She urged for more support and encouragement from schools, parents, and government bodies to help revive the interest and participation of young girls in athletics.
Valsamma believes that the responsibility lies not just with the athletes but also with the entire ecosystem surrounding sports in Kerala. “We need to create an environment that fosters talent, provides proper training facilities, and, most importantly, supports female athletes. Only then can we hope to recapture the glory that Kerala once enjoyed in the field of athletics,” she added.
As she looks towards the future, Valsamma remains hopeful that with increased awareness and dedication, a new generation of female athletes can emerge and help restore Kerala’s reputation in athletics. “Athletics can empower young women and provide them with opportunities to shine, just as it did for me,” she concluded, leaving a resonant call for action for all stakeholders involved in sports in the state.
