The Secretariat of Rural Development (Seder) is maintaining a collaborative effort with the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety, and Quality (Senasica), implementing strategic measures to combat the resurgence of the screwworm in Yucatán.
Screwworm larvae, which infest and feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals, pose a significant threat to livestock health and agriculture. Following prior successful eradication efforts in the region, authorities are on high alert to manage and eliminate any re-emergence of this pest.
The current strategy involves comprehensive monitoring and surveillance to detect any cases of infestation early. Local farmers are being educated on the signs of screwworm presence and are encouraged to report any suspicious cases immediately. In addition to outreach efforts, the government is deploying pheromone traps and biologically-based approaches to trap and reduce the screwworm population in affected areas.
Collaboration between Seder and Senasica focuses not only on control measures but also on preventive strategies. Ongoing research and development initiatives aim to improve methods for controlling the screwworm lifecycle and enhancing the effectiveness of pest management tactics.
Farmers in Yucatán are emphasizing the importance of these measures for the sustainability of their agricultural practices. Maintaining livestock health is vital not only for economic viability but also for the food supply chain in the region. As concerns grow over the potential impact of screwworm infestations, coordinated efforts are key to safeguarding local agriculture.
Authorities are urging stakeholders to remain vigilant and committed to fighting this threat, highlighting that a collaborative approach will be crucial in ensuring the screwworm remains under control and does not impact the livelihoods of farmers across Yucatán. Community engagements and information sessions are scheduled to reinforce this message and keep all parties informed about the latest developments and best practices in screwworm management.
