Some newly revealed concept art from *Superman* has surfaced, offering an intriguing look at how different Kal-El’s Kryptonian parents almost appeared. The early designs showcase a version of Jor-El and Lara Lor-Von that leans heavily into a surreal and sci-fi aesthetic.
The artwork comes from concept artist Victor Martinez, who shared the unused art depicting how Jor-El and Lara were envisioned for the film. Instead of a more traditional hologram or recorded message, the concept imagined something visually striking within the Fortress of Solitude.
Martinez explained: “Early concept art for the Jor-El and Lara hologram seen inside The Fortress of Solitude. The idea was that their image would be projected within the crystals making up the fortress walls. Seen here with ba-El as they prepare to give him away to Earth.” This notion paints a very different emotional tone; there’s something more alien and almost mythic about the parents being embedded in the Fortress itself.
In contrast, what ultimately appeared on screen sparked conversation for entirely different reasons. In the film, the portrayal of Jor-El and Lara Lor-Von diverges sharply from what fans have typically expected. After Superman is beaten brought to the Fortress , the Caretaker Robots begin playing the message sent to Earth with him. While initially familiar, it soon becomes clear that part of the message was damaged during the journey.
Later on, when Lex Luthor breaks into the Fortress and the Engineer decodes the corrupted portion, viewers are met with an unexpected twist. Jor-El and Lara are revealed not as noble saviors, but as parents with far more ruthless intentions. Rather than merely ensuring their son’s survival, they sent him to dominate.
The message suggests Earth was chosen specifically because humanity would be easy to conquer, insinuating that Kal-El should rebuild Krypton’s legacy lineage across the planet. This creative decision became one of the film’s most discussed elements, with some viewers appreciating how it reshaped Superman’s journey and forced him to define his own morality independent of his origins. Others were less enthused about seeing such iconic characters twisted into something so cold.
Regardless, this concept art serves as a compelling reminder of the myriad directions a film like *Superman* can take before arriving at the version that ultimately graces the screen.
