Tensions reached a boiling point in the Rajya Sabha on Monday as opposition members staged a walkout in protest against the government’s handling of issues concerning Congress leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi. The uproar was primarily triggered ’s demand to discuss recent events in the Lok Sabha, where they accused the government of obstructing Gandhi from addressing the House.
The dissent began when opposition leaders sought to raise concerns regarding the treatment of Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha, arguing that he was being denied crucial opportunities to speak. They accused the ruling party of silencing dissent and ignoring the voices of opposition leaders, there democratic process.
In response, Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar firmly intervened, stating that discussions pertaining to the proceedings of the Lok Sabha are not permissible in the Rajya Sabha. His decision effectively halted Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who had started to read excerpts from the memoirs of famed author Navarane that he believed were pertinent to the discussion.
The chair’s decision to stop Kharge led to an immediate backlash from opposition members, who argued that their rights to speak and seek accountability from the government were being unjustly curtailed. Frustrated of recourse, opposition members subsequently made their way out of the chamber, chanting slogans against the government and expressing their discontent.
This incident underscores the ongoing friction between the ruling party and opposition in Parliament, fueled on governance and accountability. With the monsoon session already marked , the recent walkout reflects the deepening divide within the legislative assembly and the challenges of maintaining decorum amidst rising tensions.
As the opposition called for further discussions on the matter, it remains to be seen how the government responds to their demands and whether this episode will impact future sessions in Parliament.
