SpaceX’s recent proposal to launch a million satellite data centers into orbit promised a new era of computing power. The idea was that these facilities, positioned far above the Earth, would run on clean solar energy and significantly scale technological capabilities. Initially perceived as a groundbreaking solution, this plan was touted as having minimal environmental repercussions.
However, experts quickly challenged that notion, revealing a more complex reality. Research indicates that the emissions associated with rocket launches could outweigh any possible environmental benefits. Each SpaceX launch generates significant pollutants, including black soot and water vapor, which persist in the upper atmosphere and are more harmful than similar emissions from terrestrial sources.
The implications of these launches are substantial. Aside from the air pollution from rocket emissions, accidents can lead to toxic chemical spills and deadly debris. For instance, a recent Starship test flight went awry, resulting in a fire at Boca Chica State Park, which is home to endangered species. Additionally, the potential for satellite collisions raises concerns over “Kessler Syndrome,” a scenario where increased debris could render certain orbital regions dangerously overcrowded.
