Threads, Meta’s text-based social platform, has become a popular space for users to connect over shared interests. As part of their ongoing developments, the platform has focused on enhancing community interaction since its inception in 2023. With features like communities and custom feeds, Threads aimed to facilitate more meaningful conversations.
This week, Threads introduced a significant shift with the launch of “live chats.” This new feature allows users to join real-time discussions about live events, hosted within specialized communities. Unlike Instagram’s broadcast channels that only permit one-way communication, live chats promote interactivity from selected hosts and community members.
As Threads debuted this feature with the NBAThreads Community during the playoffs, well-known hosts like Malika Andrews and Rachel Nichols began engaging audiences in fresh dialogues. Users can share various media types and interact through text and reactions, while also having the option to observe even if they can’t contribute. The chats remain accessible after the live event, ensuring ongoing engagement.
Looking forward, Meta plans to expand this feature across more communities, introducing additional options like co-hosting and quote-sharing. As Threads works to compete with platforms like X, these innovations could play a crucial role in retaining and growing their user base, which recently reached 150 million daily users.
