Famous translator Hwang Seok-hee has been removed from major streaming platforms and online bookstores following reports of two prior criminal convictions for sex offenses. Episodes of TvN’s “You Quiz on the Block” and MBC’s reality show “Point of Omniscient Interfere,” which feature Hwang, have been taken down from the streaming platforms Tving and Wavve, respectively. In addition, highlight clips from these shows have also been removed. Major online bookstores have ceased sales of his essays as a precautionary measure.
These actions come in light of a media report released on Tuesday, which disclosed that Hwang had received suspended sentences for two separate cases involving sexual offenses. This revelation has prompted a swift response from various content distributors, eager to distance themselves from potential controversy.
In an Instagram post, Hwang confirmed that he was consulting with his lawyer and warned that he would consider taking legal action against any reports he deemed false or unverifiable. As of Tuesday evening, attempts to reach Hwang for further comment were unsuccessful.
Hwang rose to prominence following his translation of the 2016 action-comedy “Deadpool,” which gained him widespread recognition. Since then, he has built a high-profile career, working on numerous major Hollywood titles, including his most recent project, the sci-fi film “Project Hail Mary.” Additionally, he is reportedly involved in the translation of an upcoming significant production.
The fallout from these allegations marks a concerning chapter in Hwang’s career, as he navigates the implications of his past convictions while attempting to maintain his professional standing in a highly competitive industry.
