Yesterday marked the IX gala of the “Gaudí” Awards, presented Cinema Academy, with attendance from the cinematic community of this dissident autonomy.
The big winner of the night was a film not made in the Catalan language: “A Monster Calls,” directed by J.A. Bayona. The young filmmaker, already a previous award winner for his earlier films “The Orphanage” and “The Impossible,” has established himself as one of Barcelona’s most significant directors, recently signed direct the new “Jurassic Park” saga.
Bayona’s original and poignant work swept the main categories, winning eight awards including Best Film in a Non-Catalan Language, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Production Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects. Additionally, “The Next Skin,” and Isa Campo, was honored with awards for Best Film and Best Screenplay in the local language, showcasing Campo’s characteristic independent style that includes some concessions to commercial viability. Emma Suárez received the award for Best Actress for her performance in the same film, while Eduard Fernández won for his role as Paesa in “The Man with a Thousand Faces.”
Among the other notable wins were Best Original Music for Sílvia Pérez Cruz for “Close to Your House,” and Best Short Film, awarded to “Timecode” énez, who is following up his “Palme d’Or” win at Cannes with nominations for the Goya and the Oscar. The documentary “Mayor,” directed , was also recognized. Meanwhile, avant-garde filmmaker Albert Serra managed to take home only two Gaudí awards for his innovative film “The Death of Louis XIV”: for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairdressing.
The Academy President, producer Isona Passola, emphasized the importance of Catalan cinema during a time of crisis amid the ongoing independence process, joined of the Generalitat, Carles Puigdemont, Barcelona’s Mayor, Ada Colau, and the President of the Catalan Parliament, Carme Forcadell.
