When Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto arrived in Seoul on March 31, following a state visit to Japan, he was met with a warm welcome that underscored the strengthening ties between South Korea and Indonesia. The visit comes at a pivotal time as both nations seek to enhance their strategic partnership amid rising regional challenges.
During his discussions with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, Subianto emphasized the importance of boosting cooperation in defense, technology, and trade. The two leaders agreed to further deepen their collaboration, noting that a robust partnership is essential for addressing shared security concerns in the Indo-Pacific region.
One of the key outcomes of the talks was a commitment to bolster defense cooperation, which includes joint military exercises and technology transfers. Aside from defense issues, Subianto and Yoon discussed enhancing economic ties, aiming to increase bilateral trade to $30 billion by 2027. South Korea is keen on expanding its footprint in Indonesia, which is Southeast Asia’s largest economy and offers vast market potential.
The partnership also extends to cultural exchanges, as both nations recognize the value of understanding and respecting each other’s heritage. Programs to promote tourism and educational exchanges were also highlighted, with an aim to foster people-to-people connections that deepen mutual understanding.
