Thangam Thennarasu, the Tamil Nadu Minister for Municipal Administration, Urban Housing, and Implementation of Special Projects, has reiterated the urgent need for the Central government to expedite the approval process for the Metro Rail projects in Coimbatore and Madurai. During a recent press conference, Thennarasu emphasized that these projects are essential for enhancing urban mobility and meeting the growing transportation needs of these rapidly developing cities.
Coimbatore and Madurai, two of Tamil Nadu’s major urban centers, are facing significant challenges due to increasing traffic congestion and inadequate public transport facilities. Thennarasu outlined that the proposed Metro Rail systems in both cities would not only alleviate traffic woes but also promote sustainable urban transport solutions. He highlighted that the efficient and reliable Metro Rail service could significantly reduce travel time and improve the overall quality of life for residents.
The minister pointed to the successful implementation of Metro Rail projects in cities like Chennai, noting that similar development in Coimbatore and Madurai would pave the way for economic growth and job creation. “We have consistently urged the Centre to prioritize these projects, as they align with the vision of modernizing urban infrastructure across the state,” he stated, appealing for timely intervention from the central authorities.
Thennarasu also acknowledged the support from local stakeholders and the public, who have shown a keen interest in the development of a Metro system. This, he said, further underlines the necessity of these projects for public welfare. He urged citizens to remain engaged and express their support for the initiative, emphasizing that a collective voice could influence the decision-making process.
In response to questions about potential timelines for the projects, Thennarasu expressed optimism that with sustained advocacy and a robust proposal from the state government, the Centre would soon provide the necessary clearances to commence work. He reassured the public that the government is committed to resolving any bureaucratic hurdles that may delay the initiation of these critical infrastructure projects.
With the demand for efficient public transport solutions on the rise, the successful implementation of the Metro Rail projects in Coimbatore and Madurai could serve as a model for other cities in Tamil Nadu and beyond. Thennarasu concluded government’s dedication to bolstering urban transport systems and enhancing the overall connectivity, efficiency, and sustainability of the state’s metropolitan areas.
