It’s the summer of 1983 and I’m in my 20s. I’ve been travelling all day – Dublin to London to Istanbul – and I don’t think my heart has stopped pounding with excitement since I left my flat near Dún Laoghaire. Each leg of the journey pulls me deeper into a world rich with culture, history, and a vibrant pulse of life that is intoxicating in its beauty.
As I navigate the bustling streets of Istanbul, the scent of spices fills the air, mingling with the calls of merchants selling their wares in the market. I’m reminded that travel is about more than just the destination; it’s about the experience, the connection to the places and the people I meet along the way. The thrill of adventure courses through me, a feeling I refuse to let age diminish.
Fast forward to today, and I find myself reflecting on those moments as I prepare for yet another journey. At 60-something, people often assume my role in travel has changed. To some, I may appear to be just a grandmother with a free travel pass, content to sit back while others explore the world. But that perception couldn’t be further from the truth.
I have carried the essence of that adventurous spirit into my later years, and it remains as vibrant as it was in the 1980s. I still yearn to roam the cobblestoned streets of a distant city, to savor the taste of street food, to dance with locals during vibrant festivals. Travel has never been restricted me; it has been a lifelong love affair that continues to shape who I am.
Embracing this ongoing journey also means celebrating the lessons learned along the way. With age comes wisdom, and I have had the privilege of gathering stories and insights from people around the globe. Each trip serves as a reminder of my own resilience and adaptability, as well as a testament to the connections that transcend generations and cultures.
I’m not merely a tourist peeking into the world outside my front door; I am a participant in life’s grand tapestry. I engage with my surroundings, willing to forge friendships that challenge my perspectives and enrich my understanding of the world. Each moment spent travelling is another thread woven into my narrative, and it’s a story I intend to continue for as long as I breathe.
So here I am, ready to embark on yet another adventure, armed with the youthful enthusiasm that sparked my journey all those years ago. I believe travel is a celebration of life, a testament to the spirit of curiosity that resides in all of us, regardless of our age. I am a traveler, a seeker, a woman alive in the world – and that, my friends, is who I have always been.
