Health workers under the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (AHPA) have expressed strong opposition to the proposed 2026 Health Sector Executive Bills currently under consideration Assembly. The unions have issued a warning that if these bills are passed in their current form, they could significantly undermine Nigeria’s existing healthcare system.
The JOHESU and AHPA argue that the legislation, which aims to amend critical components of the healthcare delivery framework, lacks sufficient consultation and fails to address fundamental issues faced and the public. They contend that the bills, as they stand, may centralize power in a manner that diminishes the roles of various health professions, thus compromising the quality and accessibility of healthcare services across the nation.
In a statement released during a press conference, union representatives emphasized that the proposed amendments threaten to disrupt the delicate balance within the healthcare sector, fostering disunity among healthcare professionals and ultimately leading to a deterioration in patient care. They highlighted concerns that the legislation could lead to the marginalization of certain health professions, making it harder for them to operate effectively and collaboratively within the broader healthcare ecosystem.
The unions called for the National Assembly to reconsider the bills, urging lawmakers to engage in a more comprehensive dialogue with health sector stakeholders. They stressed the importance of fostering an inclusive approach that prioritizes the expertise and collaboration of various health professionals to ensure a cohesive and sustainable healthcare pathway for Nigeria.
“We believe that any reform in the health sector must emerge from consensus among all stakeholders involved,” the statement read. “Our goal is to work together to enhance healthcare delivery, not to create divisions that could harm public health.”
JOHESU and AHPA have vowed to mobilize their members and engage the public in advocacy efforts to prevent the passage of the current executive bills, emphasizing the critical need for lawmakers to prioritize the future of Nigeria’s healthcare system.
As the National Assembly prepares to deliberate the proposed health sector bills, the voices of health workers and their concerns about the implications for healthcare delivery and professional collaboration will play a crucial role in shaping the legislative agenda in the coming months.
