Zimbabwe Power Shortage to Worsen as Hydro Plant Halts Generation

Published on April 4, 2026

Zimbabwe’s prolonged power shortage is set to worsen after the entity managing southern Africa’s biggest dam ordered the suspension of electricity generation at its main hydro plant. The decision, stemming from low water levels in the reservoir, has left the country facing an even graver energy crisis.

The Kariba Dam, which straddles the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, has been pivotal in supplying electricity to the region. However, with drought conditions exacerbating the situation, the water levels have plummeted, leading to the suspension of operations at the Kariba South Power Station. This hydroelectric facility is critical, contributing nearly half of Zimbabwe’s electricity supply.

Authorities have reported that the dam’s water level has fallen significantly, and with no immediate relief in sight, the situation is expected to deteriorate further. Residents and businesses across Zimbabwe have been feeling the effects of the energy crisis for months, with power outages often lasting for up to 18 hours each day. The halt in hydroelectric generation will likely extend these outages, leading to increased frustration among citizens.

Energy experts have warned that the shutdown could severely impact the country’s economy, which is already grappling with inflation and a struggling agricultural sector. Most industries rely heavily on consistent electricity for operations, and the current power shortages could disrupt production, potentially leading to job losses and increased prices for goods.

The government has been under pressure to find alternative solutions to the energy crisis. While efforts to explore renewable energy options are underway, the transition will take time, leaving many to question how long they can endure the current power situation.

As power supply dwindles, the nation’s hope of economic recovery appears to dim. The ongoing situation underscores the urgent need for Zimbabwe to find long-term solutions to its energy challenges and ensure that citizens have access to reliable electricity.
