Breathitt County School District in Kentucky has long faced financial constraints, operating on an annual budget of around $25 million. For years, the district has allocated resources toward education and infrastructure while grappling with limited funding opportunities.
Recently, a significant conflict arose as the district pursued legal action against prominent social media companies for alleged violations linked to the mental health impacts on students. Instead of facing trial, Meta, Snap, TikTok, and YouTube opted for settlement agreements that would collectively amount to a staggering $27 million.
The settlement has been broken down with Meta agreeing to pay $9 million, while Snap and TikTok each contribute $8 million, and YouTube provides just over $2 million. This payout exceeds the district’s annual budget by 8%, a substantial financial boon that could reshape its operational landscape.
